What Is the ACCUPLACER Test?

According to College Board, ACCUPLACER tests make sure you are placed in classes that are right for you, so you do not waste time or money on courses you do not need. Your college may ask you to take one test or several, depending on your program and whether you already have SAT, ACT or high school results that place you.

There is no time limit on the tests, and the questions are computer-adaptive: each answer determines how hard the next question is. That is why practising under realistic conditions, and taking care over every question, matters more than speed (College Board).

ACCUPLACER Math Practice Test

Math is the most searched ACCUPLACER practice area. Most students take Arithmetic or QAS; AAF is for students heading into higher-level math such as college algebra, precalculus or calculus. Your college decides which math test you start on.

  • Arithmetic: practise fraction and decimal operations, percent problems and converting between fractions, decimals and percents. Practice: Next-Gen Arithmetic practice test, Arithmetic question bank.
  • QAS: practise solving linear equations, ratios, exponents, reading graphs and basic statistics such as mean and median. Practice: QAS question bank.
  • AAF: practise factoring, quadratics, functions and exponent and log rules, using the official AAF sample questions.
  • Calculator: some questions provide an onscreen calculator (shown by a calculator icon). You cannot bring your own calculator unless it is an approved accommodation (College Board).

ACCUPLACER Reading Practice Test

The Reading test checks how well you understand passages and the meaning of words in context. Practise by reading short articles, summarising the main idea in one sentence, and working out unfamiliar words from the sentence around them. Practice: Next-Gen Reading practice test, Reading question bank.

ACCUPLACER Writing Practice Test

The Writing test asks you to revise and edit passages: fixing grammar, punctuation and sentence structure, and improving how ideas are organised. Review subject-verb agreement, comma rules, run-ons and fragments, and transitions. If your school also gives WritePlacer, practise writing a short, organised essay that takes a clear position and supports it with examples. Practice: Next-Gen Writing practice test, Writing question bank.

ACCUPLACER ESL Practice Test

If English is not your first language, your college may give you ACCUPLACER ESL tests: Language Use, Listening, Reading Skills and Sentence Meaning, and possibly the WritePlacer ESL essay. College Board offers free ESL sample questions and a WritePlacer ESL guide with scored essays.

ACCUPLACER Scores and Placement

  • No one passes or fails ACCUPLACER. Your score is compared with your college’s cut scores to decide your course placement.
  • Next-Generation ACCUPLACER scores are commonly reported on a 200–300 scale; each college sets its own placement scores, so ask your advisor what score you need for the course you want.
  • Your score report includes Skills Insight statements that show which skills you have mastered and which to improve.
  • Retake rules and fees are set by each college, so check with your testing center before retesting.

ACCUPLACER and TSIA2 (Texas)

Students entering public colleges in Texas usually take the TSIA2 instead. It is also delivered through College Board, and you must complete a Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) before testing. College Board offers free TSIA2 practice tests after the PAA. Many students use ACCUPLACER reading, writing and math practice to prepare for TSIA2 as well.

ACCUPLACER Practice Questions with Answers

These are original ACCUPLACER-style practice questions written for this guide. Try each one, then open the answer.

Sample 1: Arithmetic

What is 3/4 + 2/3?

  1. 5/7
  2. 5/12
  3. 17/12
  4. 6/7
Show answer and explanation

Answer: C

Use a common denominator of 12: 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12 (or 1 5/12).

Sample 2: Arithmetic

What is 15% of 80?

  1. 8
  2. 12
  3. 15
  4. 20
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B

0.15 × 80 = 12.

Sample 3: QAS

Solve for x: 3x − 7 = 11.

  1. x = 4/3
  2. x = 6
  3. x = 18
  4. x = 1.33
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B

Add 7 to both sides: 3x = 18, so x = 6.

Sample 4: AAF

Which expression is the factored form of x² − 5x + 6?

  1. (x − 1)(x − 6)
  2. (x + 2)(x + 3)
  3. (x − 2)(x − 3)
  4. (x − 3)(x + 2)
Show answer and explanation

Answer: C

You need two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to −5: −2 and −3. So x² − 5x + 6 = (x − 2)(x − 3).

Sample 5: Reading

“The new policy was ambiguous, so employees disagreed about what it required.” In this sentence, ambiguous most nearly means:

  1. strict
  2. unclear
  3. popular
  4. temporary
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B

The employees disagreed about what the policy required, which shows its meaning was unclear.

Sample 6: Writing

  1. The list of required documents is on the website.
  2. The lists of required document is on the website.
  3. The list of required documents were on the website.
  4. No change
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A

The subject is “list” (singular), so the verb must be “is”. “Of required documents” is a phrase that does not change the subject.

Test Day Tips

  • Contact your college to see if you need an appointment; some allow walk-in testing.
  • Bring a valid photo ID such as a driver’s license, passport, or school or military ID.
  • Leave phones, watches, paper and calculators outside the testing room.
  • Take your time: there is usually no time limit, and every answer affects the next question.
