What Is the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam?
Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists dispense medications, manage inventory, process prescriptions and insurance claims, and keep patient records. A national certification exam shows employers you have the core knowledge to do this safely. Both the PTCB CPhT and the NHA ExCPT programs are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
Certification is not the same as a state license. Each State Board of Pharmacy sets its own rules for registering or licensing pharmacy technicians, and some require national certification while others do not. Check your state board’s rules before you choose an exam. Some employers and states accept either credential; others name one.
PTCE vs ExCPT: Which Exam Should You Take?
- PTCE (PTCB): the most widely recognised pharmacy technician exam, with a strong focus on medications, federal law, patient safety and order entry. Taken in person at a Pearson VUE test center.
- ExCPT (NHA): often used by schools and retail employers that partner with NHA. It can be taken at a PSI test center or online with live remote proctoring.
- How to choose: check which credential your state board, school or employer requires or accepts, then compare eligibility, cost and testing options.
What Is on the PTCE?
PTCB’s PTCE content outline (effective January 6, 2026) splits the exam into four knowledge domains:
| Domain | % of exam | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Medications | 35% | Generic and brand names, drug classes, interactions, doses and dosage forms, side effects, stability and storage |
| 2. Federal Requirements | 18.75% | Controlled substance rules and DEA requirements, handling and disposal of hazardous drugs, recalls |
| 3. Patient Safety and Quality Assurance | 23.75% | Error prevention, look-alike/sound-alike drugs, Tall Man lettering, hygiene and cleaning standards |
| 4. Order Entry and Processing | 22.50% | Prescription interpretation, abbreviations, calculations, compounding, NDC numbers and expiration dates |
Medications is the largest domain, so learning the top generic and brand names and drug classes pays off most. Calculations show up in order entry, so practise dose, days’-supply and conversion problems.
ExCPT Exam Overview
According to the NHA, the ExCPT is a 100-question exam taken at a PSI testing center or through live remote proctoring. It includes scored questions plus a small number of unscored pretest questions. NHA publishes a free ExCPT test plan and sells an official ExCPT practice test. Full details are in the NHA candidate handbook.
Eligibility Requirements
| Exam | How to qualify |
|---|---|
| PTCE | PTCB: live in the US or its territories and complete either (1) a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (or finish within 60 days of applying), or (2) at least 500 hours of pharmacy technician work experience. A pharmacy degree also qualifies. |
| ExCPT | NHA: a high school diploma or GED (or expected within 12 months), plus either a pharmacy technician training program completed in the last 5 years, or 1 year of work experience with at least 1,200 supervised pharmacy hours in the last 3 years. |
Pharmacy Technician Exam Cost
- PTCE: $129 to apply for CPhT certification and take the exam (PTCB).
- PTCB practice tools: the PTCE Practice Bank is $65 (300+ questions and 400 flashcards) and the Pre-PTCE practice exam is $29 (PTCB).
- ExCPT: the exam fee is paid when you schedule through your NHA account. Schools and employers sometimes sponsor it.
- Retakes: each retake is paid at the full exam price.
Registering and Exam Day
- PTCE: create a PTCB account, apply, and once approved you will get an email authorising you to schedule at a Pearson VUE test center. Arrive 30 minutes early with an approved ID that matches your PTCB account name.
- ExCPT: create a free NHA account, apply, then choose a date and either a PSI test center or live remote proctoring.
- Accommodations: both PTCB and NHA offer ADA testing accommodations; request them during the application.
- Can I take it online? The ExCPT can be taken online with a live remote proctor. The PTCE must be taken in person at a Pearson test center.
Scores, Passing and Retakes
- PTCE: your unofficial result appears on screen right after the exam, and official results are posted to your PTCB account within three weeks. PTCB uses a scaled score; the passing score is commonly reported as 1400 on a 1000–1600 scale.
- ExCPT: NHA uses scaled scores from 200 to 500, and you need 390 or higher to pass. Online results are usually posted within two days.
- ExCPT retakes: wait at least 30 days between attempts, with 3 attempts allowed; after a third failure you must wait 1 year for each further attempt.
- PTCE retakes: PTCB sets waiting periods between attempts; check its Help Center before you reschedule.
